Appalachian Trail, Putnam County, New York

My friends and I hiked a 7.5-mile section of the Appalachian Trail (AT). We met at the intersection of Old West Point Road East and Graymoor Village, where Old West Point Road East transitions from a paved road to a dirt road.

Breakneck Ridge to South Beacon Mtn., Putnam/Dutchess County, NY

This was a repeat of my August 1, 2010 hike, except that this time instead of a solo outing I went with four other hikers. Also, instead of Summer it was a Spring (that felt more like a late Winter).

While this has been the second mild winter in a row, we did have snowfall on Friday night, and Fahnestock reopened its winter park.

Clarence Fahnestock Memorial State Park, Putnam County, New York

I decided to try the northwest corner of the park, which I had never previously visited. Driving north on U.S. 9, one passes county road 301, and then after a quarter mile one reaches the Hubbard Lodge park entrance, on the right. Turning into the entrance, the road splits, and another sign directs drivers to the left for the lodge and parking. The lodge is a small building on the right side of the road, about 0.2 miles from the entrance. Parking is available in the shoulders of the road.

Clarence Fahnestock Memorial State Park, Putnam County, New York

YBS, Xi and I were interested in cross-country skiing or snow shoeing, so we headed north to Clarence Fahnestock State Park, which has a winter park featuring groomed trails and gear rental. Unfortunately, by the time we arrived, close to 11:00 a.m., the man at the gate told us that the parking lot was full and that they had rented all the ski gear. Disappointed, we drove southwest on Route 301 a half mile and decided to hike a bit.

Breakneck Ridge to South Beacon Mtn., Putnam/Dutchess County, NY

I had previously hiked in Beacon on May 9th of this year, and wanted to return to the area and sample another set of trails. I selected the Breakneck Ridge trail, which begins in Putnam County before crossing over into Dutchess County.
