Ramapo Mountain State Forest, Bergen & Passaic Counties, New Jersey

I joined Rachel, Martin, and Nachi, whom I’ve hiked with many times before, as well as Aaron and Yitzy, whom I don’t know if I’ve met before or not. My wife Batya didn’t join us, as she had to take care of training for work, and also because she is still recovering from her shoulder injury and was afraid this might be too rugged a hike.

Allaire State Park, Monmouth County, New Jersey

On Washington’s Birthday/Presidents’ Day, we decided to visit Allaire State Park. We followed a hike written up by Daniela Wagstaff in 2011, though there have been a few changes to the park since then. We parked in the lot on County Route 524 (Atlantic Avenue) at 40.15755, -74.12056. We crossed the road, turned left, and walked a short distance (passing a house), coming soon to a double gate on the right, at which point we entered the woods on the orange trail. For reference, see the park map:

Allamuchy Mountain State Park, Sussex County, New Jersey

Interested in visiting a park we had not visited previously, I selected Allamuchy Mountain State Park, in Sussex County. Despite the name, we found the park to be very flat. We began our hike on the white-blazed Deer Path Trail, hiking north:

Sourland Mountain Preserve, Somerset County, New Jersey

Today we drove to Sourland Mountain Preserve, a 3025 acre county park, where we enjoyed a late Fall day with temperatures in the upper 60s! It was nice to hike with a short sleeved shirt this time of year. The name “Sourlands” is derived from the fact that early settlers found the rocky soils difficult to farm.

Ramapo Mountain State Forest, Bergen & Passaic Counties, New Jersey

We visited Ramapo Mountain State Forest, a 4200 acre forest primarily in Bergen County, New Jersey, with a small percentage of the land in Passaic County. While this was my first visit, the forest is quite close (in distance and in character) to Ringwood State Park, where I hiked previously.

Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, Morris County, New Jersey

On the first Sunday of Spring, we visited Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, which was designated as a national wildlife refuge in 1960, to protect it from the Port Authority’s plan to turn the land into an airport.

Harriman State Park, Rockland County, New York

It had been two weeks since our last hike, but we wanted to keep in shape, especially as we have an upcoming hiking vacation. Therefore, on this Labor Day we drove to the southwestern tip of Harriman for a hike on the yellow-blazed Suffern-Bear Mountain trail. I had never hiked in this section of the park before.

Norvin Green State Forest, Passaic County, New Jersey

I only have a few photos from this hike in Norvin Green State Forest, as I have been to this park a number of times.

High Point State Park, Sussex County, New Jersey

On Memorial Day, Batya and I drove a couple of hours to High Point State Park, which has the highest elevation in New Jersey, of 1803′ above sea level. The occasion was the annual Jewish Outdoors Club “Fun Day.” This event was planned to be smaller in size than the previous year’s event, and only 157 tickets were sold. Batya and I had hoped to join the group that Nachi was leading, which was the only strenuous hike offered.

Palisades Interstate Park, Bergen County, New Jersey

In 2012, I had enjoyed a number of hikes with a small group of people whom I had met through the Jewish Outdoors Club and mutual friends. In 2013, the small group wasn’t very active, and I was also not hiking as much, as I was busy dating Batya (who featured in a couple of my hikes from 2013). Batya and I were married on March 31, 2014, and I hope we will be able to enjoy many hikes together. On Mother’s Day, we met Martin, Yaffa, and Yona for a hike in Palisades Interstate Park.
